An Omani co-pilot for Flydubai planned to hijack a plane on the Dubai–Tel Aviv route and crash it into the terminal of Ben Gurion Airport. This was announced by the Attorney General of the United Arab Emirates. The attempt took place on September 30, when the co-pilot attacked the captain during the flight. novinky.cz ↗
According to investigators, the co-pilot intended to alter the plane's course and use it in a suicide attack. He was inspired by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in which hijackers crashed planes into buildings in the United States. Le Monde ↗
During the incident, the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain with an emergency axe and attempted to seize control of the aircraft. The crew thwarted the attack, and the plane subsequently made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. ANSA ↗
Investigators stated that the suspect prepared for the planned hijacking by watching materials promoting terrorism and undergoing boxing training. According to the prosecution, he had met all the required security conditions when he was hired. He reportedly told investigators that he acted alone. Independent ↗
The United Arab Emirates continue to investigate the case. The information released does not provide further details about the charges or what legal steps will follow against the co-pilot.
