The United States plans to execute Nidal Hasan by firing squad on December 3, who killed 13 people at the Fort Hood military base in Texas in 2009. The Department of Defense wants to broadcast the execution of the convicted former army psychiatrist via live stream. RTE News ↗

During the attack, Hasan shot and killed 13 people, including 12 service members, and wounded others. He was sentenced to death for the act. The execution is to be carried out by a firing squad, which is an extraordinary method of execution in the United States. Le Monde ↗

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the execution is to be public and that authorities will ensure the ability to watch its course. According to Pentagon officials, this would be the first military execution in the United States in more than 60 years. The broadcast would also rank among the extraordinary cases of publicly showing the carrying out of a death sentence in the country. Tagesschau ↗

Hegseth announced his intention in a video posted on a social network. The Department of Defense has not yet provided details about the technical arrangements for the broadcast or about who will be able to watch it. Le Figaro ↗

Hasan's case is linked to one of the most tragic attacks on a US military base. The planned execution will be a further step in the long-running judicial proceedings, and its public broadcast may spark debate about the limits of informing the public about the carrying out of a death sentence.
