Uruguay was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup already after the group stage, failing to secure a single win after two draws and a defeat to Spain. Before the decisive match, reports emerged within the delegation of tension between the players and the coach. According to available information, part of the locker room criticized Bielsa's methods, training sessions, and tactics for the match against Spain. The coach reportedly responded to the objections with a long speech to the team, but the atmosphere before the key match remained tense. idnes.cz ↗
The match against Spain brought further problems. According to the statistical website Opta, goalkeeper Fernando Muslera himself asked to be substituted after conceding a goal. Uruguay thus concluded an unsuccessful tournament run, from which, given the country's footballing tradition, a significantly better result had been expected. n-tv ↗
