Toby Keith on One of His Biggest Hits: "The Dumbest Song I've Ever Heard"

Red Solo Cup is one of Toby Keith's most successful singles, but he didn't write it himself — it was written by Brett Beavers and Jim Beavers, along with Brad Warren and Brett Warren. Since its release, it has become a staple of his concerts and a party anthem like few others. American Songwriter ↗

Keith later said of it: „It's the dumbest song I've ever heard in my life, but it's so dumb that it's good." What's interesting about its success is that no one was even supposed to pitch it to him — let alone to him specifically. However, one of his employees came across it, played it for him, and Keith immediately saw its potential. American Songwriter ↗

Keith died in February 2024. Red Solo Cup is not on SuperMusic.cz; six songs from his catalog are there with both chords and lyrics — including American Soldier and Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.

Red Solo Cup was released in 2011 on the album Clancy's Tavern and is one of the few Toby Keith singles that reached far beyond a country audience. The music video, featuring a string of guest cameos, became an internet phenomenon before that term was in common use.
