He also mentioned Sinéad O'Connor's debut, The Lion and the Cobra. "When it came out, I really liked it, and I really liked the single Mandinka. The Whigs used to play it," he recalls. The Afghan Whigs formed in Cincinnati in 1986 and were among the first bands from outside Seattle to sign with Sub Pop. Their blend of alternative rock with soul and R&B sensibility, most striking on the 1993 album Gentlemen, was an exception during the grunge wave.
