The Sofia daily Dnevnik and the Bulgarian daily 24 Chasa described the course of events almost minute by minute. The drone entered Bulgarian airspace at 8:10 local time and exploded roughly one hundred meters beyond the border, in the cadaster area near the former Kardam crossing not far from the town of General Toshevo. Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced this after an extraordinary meeting of the government's security council and stressed that no one was injured and no infrastructure was damaged. The identification came in the afternoon. The Bulgarian Defense Ministry said that a preliminary analysis of the debris points to a Maja-type decoy drone, widely used by the Ukrainian armed forces. This is precisely where the contradiction arises that Bulgarian media are not concealing. According to Dnevnik, Maja is primarily a deception device - meant to saturate and confuse air defense, not necessarily to strike a specific target. Radev, meanwhile, spoke of a "significant amount of explosives" because the blast was heard from afar and was accompanied by black smoke. Dnevnik ↗
A response from Bucharest complicated the whole picture. The Romanian Ministry of National Defense said its radar systems had not detected any flying object that crossed Romanian airspace in the direction of Bulgaria. The Romanian foreign ministry reacted separately. 24 Chasa ↗, Digi24 ↗
Kyiv denied intent. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry stated that its defense forces had not deliberately directed any assets toward Bulgaria and promised to clarify the circumstances. Both Slovak and Czech media covered the incident quickly and properly - TASR and SITA had the story shortly after noon, and STVR was the only one to say that it was a decoy drone of the Maja type. STVR ↗, teraz.sk ↗
But the agency line stopped at Radev's statement. None of the twenty Slovak and Czech reports on the incident mention the Romanian radars that detected nothing. For the security dimension of the incident, that is at least as important as the drone's origin: if the Bulgarian version is confirmed, namely that the machine carrying explosives came in through Romanian airspace without radar detection, the question concerns not only Ukraine, but also what the alliance's southeastern flank is capable of seeing.
The second context is also missing. Last month alone, Romania reported more than thirty drone incidents on its territory or in its airspace - including downed machines and wreckage found on land and on the coast. Bucharest also warned that Russia would continue changing its drone tactics and that Romania would have to adapt to them. The third dimension is energy. According to 24 Chasa, 9.4 million cubic meters of gas pass daily through the Kardam and Negru Vodă stations, near which the drone exploded. If it is confirmed that the drone carried explosives, a distance of roughly one kilometer from the compressor station is security-relevant. 24 Chasa ↗
And finally, the political dimension. Ivajlo Mirčev, co-chair of the Yes, Bulgaria party, wrote that the incident near Kardam should be investigated as a potential attack on critical infrastructure of a NATO state. The Bulgarian opposition is therefore pushing for a harder interpretation than the one offered by its own government. Dnevnik ↗
Limits of this perspective
This is the fifth and final update wave of this article. Any further developments around drones over Romania, Bulgaria, and Moldova will be handled in a separate text - the legend above the article would become unreadable with additional waves.None of these sources is neutral. Rumen Radev is often described as a pro-Russian politician, and his government has reason to present the incident as an unintentional Ukrainian mistake rather than as a failure of its own defense. The opposition Democratic Bulgaria, by contrast, has reason to push the "attack on NATO" frame. In addition, the Bulgarian Defense Ministry published only a preliminary analysis of the wreckage - not the conclusion of the investigation.
The contradiction needs to be named openly: according to SITA, Radev later said that it was not yet clear where the drone came from or what type it was, even though the defense ministry was already speaking of a Ukrainian Maja. According to him, the sound of the drone was first picked up by the Romanian border police. Romanian radars, however, saw nothing - these three claims do not yet form a consistent picture, and each of the actors has its own political interest in how the incident is interpreted. SITA ↗
This text does not say that Ukraine attacked Bulgaria. It says that, according to the Bulgarian version, a drone carrying explosives may have flown through the airspace of two NATO members without being detected by radar - and that this is a problem regardless of who launched it.
