Pope Leo XIV called for peace and warned against indifference to violence during Easter ceremonies

During Good Friday, Pope Leo XIV became the first pope in more than six decades to personally carry the cross at all fourteen stations of the evening Way of the Cross procession at Rome's Colosseum. This marks a return to the tradition that Pope Paul VI revived at the Colosseum and which subsequent popes had not maintained in quite the same form. His predecessor Francis, who died on Easter Monday last year, did not carry the cross during the Way of the Cross. hnonline.sk ↗

The evening Way of the Cross procession at the Colosseum was attended on Friday by tens of thousands of the faithful who honored the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. During the ceremony, the Pope had time for conversations with various figures, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Israeli President Isaac Herzog. The evening Way of the Cross procession at the Colosseum is one of the Pope's most significant meditations during Holy Week, and its broadcast was aired in Slovak media. teraz.sk ↗

On Sunday, during the traditional Easter blessing Urbi et Orbi (to the City and to the World) at St. Peter's Square in the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV put forward calls for world peace. A key appeal was his call to world leaders to choose the path of peace. The Pope declared: "Let those who hold weapons in their hands lay them down; let those who have the power to unleash wars choose peace instead." At the same time, he warned against growing indifference among people to violence and to calls for building harmony throughout the world. The Pope emphasized that "we are getting used to violence, coming to terms with it, and becoming numb to suffering." postoj.sk ↗

The Pope also appealed to the faithful not to remain indifferent to the world's devastating conflicts and to strive to build peace. He emphasized that Christ's resurrection represents the victory of life, not of force. In his message, he also called for an end to the wars in Ukraine and Iran and urged the global community to reject war as a means of resolving conflicts. svet.sme.sk ↗

Similarly to Rome, the faithful in several locations, including Nitra, took part in the traditional Way of the Cross devotion through the streets of their towns. The return of this tradition represents an important symbolic moment in the structure of the Vatican's Easter ceremonies and underscores the Pope's physical participation in the liturgical life of the Church. ta3.com ↗
