Orbán denies accusation of cooperation with communist secret police
Orbán claims that at the beginning of his compulsory military service, the secret police tried to recruit him as an informant, but he rejected the offer. According to the published documents, the security services subsequently monitored him and recorded him as a target of interest. The former prime minister also stated that the surveillance affected his family, and that listening devices were installed in their bedroom. hnonline.sk ↗
The published file contains more than 20 pages of documents. With it, Orbán was responding to Németh's claim that he had access to alleged agency reports. Németh, who led the last Hungarian government before the change of regime, handed over his notes to the historical archive. Telex ↗
Historian Krisztián Ungváry stated that, in his view, the documents prove that Orbán was under surveillance after completing his military service, but not any possible prior cooperation with the secret police. If Németh indeed accessed classified materials outside the legal procedure, he may, according to the historian, have broken the law. Telex ↗
The Fidesz party backed Orbán's version and claims that the available facts and documents prove that the communist state power kept Orbán under surveillance. The dispute could develop further following examination of the archival materials and Németh's record.
