Joshua Kerry of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, appeared in a London court on Tuesday charged with the murder of former British MP Ann Widdecombe. Prosecutors stated that the 78-year-old politician died after an attack at her home in Haytor, Devon, where the perpetrator allegedly struck her repeatedly in the head with a hammer on July 8. zpravy.aktualne.cz ↗

According to prosecutors, Widdecombe was struck 21 times. The attack is said to have taken place in the kitchen while she was having lunch. The prosecution claims that Kerry arrived at the house by car, entered through the main entrance, and left with her wallet after the attack. He is said to have spent approximately two minutes at the scene. Part of the incident was reportedly captured by security cameras and a doorbell camera, according to the court. HVG ↗

Widdecombe was found dead on July 9 after she failed to appear for a scheduled online interview and her colleagues were unable to reach her. The provisional cause of death is a head injury caused by a blunt object. Kerry confirmed his identity at the hearing but did not enter a plea. The court remanded him in custody and referred the case to the Old Bailey. NOS ↗

Investigators continue to examine the motive for the attack, including a possible political or terrorist connection. Widdecombe was a longtime Conservative Party MP, later a Member of the European Parliament and a Reform UK spokesperson. Further hearings are expected to determine the procedural course of the case.
