Julian Nagelsmann is no longer the coach of the German national football team. Following the early exit at the 2026 World Cup, the German Football Association announced the termination of the collaboration with immediate effect. The decision came after Germany was eliminated in the round of sixteen by Paraguay on penalties. Spiegel.de ↗
Nagelsmann had a contract until the 2028 European Championship, but after the failure, his tenure ended after 1,015 days. According to published information, the departure was also decided following a crisis meeting in Frankfurt with the federation's leadership. The German team is thus entering a period of searching for a new direction after another disappointment at a major tournament. sport.sk ↗
The main candidate for the vacant position is Jürgen Klopp. The DFB confirmed its intention to negotiate with the former Liverpool coach about taking charge of the national team. Klopp has not coached recently and worked as a television pundit during the World Cup. Several sources state that the federation considers him the preferred successor, although some commentary warns that focusing on just one candidate could be risky. Index.hu ↗
Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz also reacted to Nagelsmann's departure, thanking him for his work with the national team. The coming days should bring negotiations over filling the position, as the German national team needs to quickly resolve the coaching question after the tournament failure. Tagesspiegel ↗
