US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has tasked tech entrepreneur Elon Musk with co-leading Project Meridian, which will explore the future of warfare. Hegseth announced this on Wednesday during a speech to troops in Quantico, Virginia. Deutschlandfunk ↗
Entrepreneur Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich are also set to participate in the project. The initiative will focus on the use of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems in armed conflicts. One of the topics will also be the concept of AI-driven warfare and the deployment of robotic units. Le Figaro ↗
Musk, who heads the company SpaceX, is thus taking on a new role in the administration of President Donald Trump. The project comes about a year after his involvement in the DOGE initiative, which focused on cutting spending and reorganizing the federal government. The Guardian ↗
Hegseth also announced further changes to the structure of the US military. The Pentagon plans to reduce the number of general and admiral positions by 20 percent. The reform is part of a broader reorganization of the armed forces being pushed by the Secretary of Defense. Tagesschau ↗
Project Meridian is meant to produce proposals on how the United States could use new technologies in conducting military operations in the future. A more detailed timeline and concrete results of the initiative have not yet been announced. Spiegel.de ↗
