Court halts execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee

A federal appeals court in the United States halted the execution of 50-year-old Christa Pike approximately an hour before the scheduled execution. The sentence in the state of Tennessee was set to be carried out on Wednesday by lethal injection. Nový Čas ↗

Pike was convicted of murdering a 19-year-old classmate, a crime she committed roughly thirty years ago, when she was 18 years old. The case involves an extremely brutal act from the 1990s. The convicted woman has been waiting on death row ever since.

The court's decision came shortly before the scheduled execution date. The ruling states that the court must review the defense's legal arguments and doubts about the lawfulness of the proceedings. Further details of these objections have not yet been made public.

Pike's execution would have been the first execution of a woman in Tennessee in more than 200 years. With its decision, the court postponed the execution, though the available information does not indicate whether this is a permanent cancellation of the execution or a temporary measure pending review of the defense's objections. Further proceedings will depend on the decision of the federal appeals court, which must first assess the legal grounds for which the execution was halted shortly before it was to be carried out.
