Merz wants a woman from the political center as Steinmeier's successor

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that after President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, a woman should take over the leadership of the state. He announced that he would propose to the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) a consensus candidate from the center of the political spectrum. He has not yet revealed her name. Telex ↗

Steinmeier has held the presidential office since 2017, and his second five-year term will end in March 2027. Under the rules, he cannot run for another term. The election of the new president is scheduled for January 30 of next year. Le Figaro ↗

Merz presented his intention during an internal meeting with the chairs of CDU district organizations. According to reports, however, the topic of a possible first female president of Germany was not among the main issues of the meeting. One of the participants stated that in his district organization, about five percent of members are interested in it. Tagesspiegel ↗

The German president has predominantly ceremonial powers, but his position includes representing the country and overseeing compliance with the constitutional order. The candidate is decided by the Federal Convention, which consists of members of the Bundestag and representatives of the federal states. kultura.pravda.sk ↗

Merz's proposal may influence further negotiations on the candidate supported by the governing coalition. The final decision will depend on agreement among political parties and on support in the Federal Convention.
