Malika Ayane returns after five years with the album Cicale

Italian singer Malika Ayane is releasing her new album Cicale after five years. Ten songs were made in collaboration with Pacifico, Andrea Bonomo, Leo Pari, Davide Simonetta, Emma Maestrelli and Dargen D'Amico. As with all her albums, the title doesn't appear in any of the songs. She was inspired by an oddity from the world of insects: cicadas live underground for up to 17 years, and then everyone judges them by the brief moment when they sing. The album moves between the existential and the everyday: it contains mature love in the song Animali notturni, a therapist quoting Valéry in Probabile, five moves in six years in Diversamente, and postcard-perfect fake happiness in Una possibilità. Ayane, who lives in Berlin, also spoke in the interview about the rise of the far right in Italy and in Germany. She also responded to Ed Sheeran dropping Macklemore from his tour after his "Free Palestine" outcry on stage: according to her, everyone involved ended up in a situation that is "coercive from every point of view." Ayane became famous in 2009 at the Sanremo festival, where she took second place among newcomers with the song Come foglie. The album Naïf (2015) produced the singles Senza fare sul serio, which quickly reached the top 10 of the Italian FIMI chart, and Tempesta. Her previous album, Malifesto, was released in 2021.
