Commission challenges Slovakia over prosecutor post and fund oversight

The European Commission has flagged Slovakia's persistent problems in the areas of the rule of law, the fight against corruption, and the oversight of European funds. Added to the existing criticism is a claim that the Commission proposed withdrawing accreditation from the Agricultural Paying Agency (PPA) as well, due to poor oversight of EU funds. ekonomika.sme.sk ↗

The government took note of the annual rule-of-law report but rejected the part of the assessment concerning the prosecution of high-level corruption. The cabinet claims the Commission is applying a double standard, while at the same time declaring that it will address the identified shortcomings. The Ministry of Justice emphasized that Slovakia did not receive any new recommendations. hnonline.sk ↗

The debate was also joined by criticism from the Rule of Law Initiative, which pointed to the accelerated adoption of laws and to the findings in the area of the fight against corruption. The Ministry of Culture, by contrast, welcomed the fact that the Commission acknowledged the ministry's progress, though it described as problematic the parts of the report that, in its view, are not comprehensive.

Another problem that remains is the unfilled post of European prosecutor for Slovakia. After six unsuccessful rounds of selection, Slovakia will become the only EU state without a European prosecutor, and according to available information, the Commission is considering further steps. The new claims regarding the PPA extend the dispute to the management of European money as well. Further developments will depend on the government's response and on whether the Commission proceeds with formal measures against Slovakia. svet.sme.sk ↗
