Klingbeil Defends Tax Reform Against Criticism from Government

German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil from the SPD faces a dispute within the government over a planned income tax reform. The Economy Ministry led by Katherina Reiche from the CDU has labeled his proposal as insufficient and is demanding amendments before the law is to be put to cabinet deliberation. Spiegel.de ↗

Criticism also came formally through a letter from the state secretary of the economy ministry. According to released information, the economy ministry objects that the proposal does not adequately address the problem of cold progression and speaks of hidden tax increases. Reiche is simultaneously pushing for the solidarity surcharge to be abolished for all taxpayers. Deutschlandfunk ↗

The Finance Ministry defends the proposal by stating that it should bring relief of approximately ten billion euros. The black-red federal government wants to push the contentious income tax reform through this week, and after coalition agreement, the law is to pass its first formal hurdle in cabinet. SITA ↗

Klingbeil also defended his proposal during a G20 ministerial meeting in the United States and criticized the approach of the economy minister. He warned that intra-governmental disputes could weaken the entire coalition. Further developments will depend on whether the cabinet will be able to pass the proposal without substantial changes, or whether pressure from the economy ministry will lead to additional amendments to the tax package.
