Hungarian parliament faces further extraordinary sessions

Hungary's National Assembly approved the 17th amendment to the Fundamental Law on Monday. 139 MPs voted in favor, 6 were against, and no one abstained. The amendment also concerns the removal of President Tamás Sulyok and the restriction of parliamentary mandates. Telex ↗

Parliamentary proceedings continued on Tuesday with an extraordinary session, which opened with an address by Prime Minister Péter Magyar. Magyar criticized Fidesz for its absence from Monday's proceedings and, ahead of the session, released a video of his speech. New information indicates that MPs will not go on summer break. A further two-day extraordinary session, initiated by Bálint Ruff, is scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday. At the same time, Tisza is pushing for broader changes in the state. The Sovereignty Protection Office was dissolved following a decision by the National Assembly on June 30, which passed with 135 votes in favor, 44 against, and 6 abstentions. Tisza party legal leader Márton Melléthei-Barna expects that Hungary could have a new electoral law within a year and a half to two years, and that President Sulyok's situation will be resolved in the near future.
