Fidesz demands database shutdown after politician's name error

Hungarian PM Péter Magyar apologized to Sándor Lezsák after his name appeared, due to a computer error, in a database of people who collaborated with the former state security service. According to available information, Lezsák was not a collaborator but a surveilled person. Telex ↗

The error concerned a database of open files, into which the names of people listed as collaborators were entered on November 4. The director of the state security historical archive admitted that the problem could affect up to several thousand people. Details about the extent of the erroneous listing have not yet been made public. Index.hu ↗

Magyar said he tried to call Lezsák, but since he could not reach him, he apologized publicly. He attributed responsibility for the error to the archive's information system. Fidesz subsequently requested that the database's operation be suspended and called for political accountability to be established. Index.hu ↗

János Bóka also demanded an apology from Prime Minister Magyar and the resignation of Zoltán Tarr, the minister for social relations and culture. The governing party claims the database should remain switched off until the cause of the error is clarified and the accuracy of the published data is verified. teraz.sk ↗

Further steps will depend on the archive's investigation and the government's decision on whether to restore the database after a technical review. The case could also open a broader discussion about responsibility for publishing data in sensitive historical files.
