Fico refuses loan for Ukraine after dispute with Strasbourg

Prime Minister Robert Fico, following a previous dispute with the European Parliament in Strasbourg, refuses to have Slovakia join the planned war loan for Ukraine. Ahead of the July NATO summit in Ankara, he wants to convene a meeting of the country's top constitutional officials and send the Slovak delegation without a mandate to approve further financial aid to Kyiv. ta3.com ↗

The dispute with the European Parliament concerned resolutions adopted in Strasbourg, which Fico described as unfair. During talks with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, he spoke of a policy of double standards. Meanwhile, the European Parliament also addressed other topics, including new rules on air passenger rights and €14.3 million in support for Romania from the EU Solidarity Fund following floods. novinky.cz ↗

At the regional level, Fico agreed with Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar to set up a working group on contentious issues surrounding the Beneš decrees. After two years, the V4 resumed joint talks among its leaders, though its unity may be tested by differing positions on Ukraine, the Hungarian minority, and Russia. SITA ↗

At home, the prime minister is also facing a case involving his son Michal Fico, who, thanks to his position as executive of the party company Agentúra Smer, reportedly earned approximately 1.4 million Czech korunas. Fico is also dealing with negotiations on combined local government elections, has not ruled out replacing a minister if the SNS fails to reach agreement with Tomáš Taraba, and visited workers on the D2 highway during the heatwave. hnonline.sk ↗

The near-term developments will thus be shaped primarily by the constitutional officials' agreement on Slovakia's position at the NATO summit and by the continuation of domestic disputes, which overlap with Fico's criticism of European institutions. lidovky.cz ↗
