European Commission wants to significantly strengthen Frontex's powers

The European Commission has proposed a reform of the Frontex border agency, which should play a stronger role in protecting the European Union's external borders and in the returns of migrants. The proposal envisages expanding its operational capabilities and increasing its personnel to as many as 30,000. Der Standard ↗

According to the plans presented, Frontex should become a more important tool of European migration policy. The agency should support member states in border checks, crisis management, and carrying out returns of persons who have no right to remain on the territory of the European Union. ANSA ↗

The proposal also includes the possibility of monitoring publicly available content on social networks. The aim is to obtain information on illegal migration and better prepare for developments in migration routes. The expansion of powers is meant to build on the legal framework created at the beginning of October. Politico Europe ↗

Frontex already provides support in protecting external borders and managing crises. However, its operation has repeatedly been accompanied by criticism. The new plans may therefore spark discussion about the scope of the agency's powers, personal data protection, and oversight of its activities. Tagesspiegel ↗

The final wording of the legislation must still be approved by the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament. The scope of the reform and the future shape of the agency will therefore continue to be negotiated. teraz.sk ↗
