EU should manage winter gas demand despite low reserves

The European Union should be able to cover demand for natural gas during the upcoming winter. However, its reserves are at historically low levels, so they will need to be monitored continuously. hnonline.sk ↗

The information was announced on Thursday, October 8, by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas. The assessment concerns the readiness of the European market for the winter period, when gas consumption usually increases due to heating.

The low level of reserves represents a risk factor for the European Union. Gas availability will depend on the development of demand and on the ability to continuously monitor the level of stored reserves. Specific data on the volume of reserves or on possible regional differences were not provided.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Europe has been trying to reduce its dependence on Russian pipeline gas. Energy security has since been one of the important topics in European policy and winter planning. teraz.sk ↗

The assessment also indicates that low reserves do not yet mean an inability to cover expected demand. However, the situation remains sensitive to developments in consumption and supply availability. The European Union will therefore need to continue closely monitoring the state of reserves during the winter.
