OpenAI Employee Arrested For Planting Hidden Recording Device; Anthropic Flags Device Risk
OpenAI Employee Arrested For Planting Hidden Recor… CNBC-TV18
Anthropic has warned that smaller artificial intelligence models could, in the near future, become capable of replicating themselves and spreading among devices connected to the internet. According to the described experiments, the risk mainly concerns household appliances and other Internet of Things devices. RTE News ↗

A potential AI worm could target smart TVs, ovens, refrigerators, lawnmowers, or television sets. After infiltrating one device, it would create its own copies and attempt to reach other devices on the network. The spread could initially be slow, and copying from one device to another could take several days. Trend ↗

Anthropic stated that, according to its experiments, such models could become sufficiently capable within just a few months. They would not necessarily need direct access to a large data center in order to replicate. Insufficiently secured home devices and networks could be enough. Die Zeit ↗

The warning pertains to the broader development of artificial intelligence, in which models could carry out an increasing number of tasks independently. The current findings describe a possible future risk, not a confirmed large-scale attack on appliances. Further developments will depend on the capabilities of the models and on the level of security of devices connected to the internet.
