Animal Collective are returning to the stage to honor their landmark 2005 album Feels. The experimental indie band will play a show at the Knockdown Center in Queens, New York, on October 22, and at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on October 24. Fan presale begins on Thursday, September 10 at 10:00 a.m. local time, with general sale starting Friday, September 11 at the same time. The announcement follows last year's twentieth anniversary of the album, which label Domino marked with a limited reissue featuring a bonus disc of nine B-sides and previously unreleased demo recordings. According to the band, that celebration left something unsaid. SPIN ↗
"When we put out the twentieth anniversary edition last year, people kept asking: why don't you play it live? It was a good question, and honestly, we hadn't even asked it ourselves," the band said in a statement on September 8. "We'd gotten so used to our schedules not lining up that it just didn't occur to us. But really — why not? That celebration felt unfinished, to you and to us." The FADER ↗
What followed was a journey back into the depths of an album they hadn't played together in years. By their own account, they had to track down old loops, tunings, pedals, and even a working minidisc player in order to pull the original sounds off it. They will play it in full, along with a few pieces from the same era, and they themselves are calling it a celebration of its 21st birthday. At the same time, they apologize to those who won't be able to attend: two shows in the country's two biggest cities, they say, leave many fans without a chance to come, but the window that opened up in their schedules is short. Feels came out at a time when the band, relocated from Baltimore to Brooklyn, was breaking into wider awareness, and to this day it remains among the most frequently cited entries in their catalog by listeners — alongside the later Merriweather Post Pavilion, which produced their most-played track, My Girls.
