Pope Leo XIV will arrive in France on Friday, 25 September, for his first official visit, which will last until 28 September. President Emmanuel Macron will receive him at the Élysée Palace, after which the Pope will head to the headquarters of the United Nations. Macron, however, will not attend any of the Masses the Pope will celebrate during the visit. Merkur ↗
The Pope's trip will begin in Paris, where several large religious celebrations are expected. One of them is expected to attract more than half a million faithful. The visit is accompanied by extensive security measures, and the programme also includes meetings with representatives of the state and government. France24 ↗
The president's decision not to attend the Masses has sparked a debate in France about the relationship between public officials and religious ceremonies. In 2023, Macron faced criticism after attending Pope Francis's Mass in Marseille. He has not publicly explained why he will not attend the Masses this time. Le Figaro ↗
Paris mayor Emmanuel Grégoire will also meet Leo XIV in Paris. He will welcome him on Friday at Notre-Dame after the vespers for the clergy, which are due to begin at 5.15 p.m. The meeting will take place near the area in front of the cathedral. Le Figaro ↗
The visit will be the Pope's first official trip to France in 18 years. Besides Paris, it will include further programme linked to religious celebrations and political talks. teraz.sk ↗
