Andreas Babler steps down as SPÖ leader and deputy chancellor

Austrian Vice-Chancellor and Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) chairman Andreas Babler has announced his resignation from his government post and from the party leadership. He presented his decision on Sunday evening in Vienna, after several hours of crisis talks with the SPÖ leadership. Deutschlandfunk ↗

Babler said he wants to end the personnel debate that has recently accompanied Austria's Social Democrats. His position was weakened above all by poor results in opinion polls. From the outset, he also faced disputes over his markedly left-wing political positions. Welt ↗

The departure from his posts is to take place gradually. According to the announcement, Babler wants to remain vice-chancellor until at least the end of 2026. From the beginning of 2027, the post of vice-chancellor is to be taken over by Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer, who is likewise a member of the SPÖ. ORF ↗

The party now faces the choice of a new leader and the restructuring of its leadership. A possible replacement of Babler was already discussed during the crisis meeting attended by SPÖ representatives. The Social Democrats will therefore have to decide who will lead the party in the coming period and how they will respond to the pressure caused by unfavorable polls. Der Standard ↗
