Carlos Alcaraz successfully returned to singles competition at the US Open in New York, defeating Roman Safiullin 6:4, 6:4, 6:4 in the first round. The Spanish title defender played his first singles match after 139 days and after a four-month-long break caused by a wrist injury. Le Figaro ↗
Before the tournament, Alcaraz claimed he felt one hundred percent fit and without pain, but after his return admitted to nervousness and the need to regain competitive rhythm. According to available information, he still had his right wrist protected and had not yet reached his usual serving speed. He managed the match without significant problems, however, and did not lose a single set on court. teraz.sk ↗
In New York, he thus confirmed that he can continue his title defense after the break. After the match, he stated that the level of his play should gradually improve. In the second round, Portuguese tennis player Jaime Faria awaits him. kultura.pravda.sk ↗
The men's competition remains more open due to the absence of Jannik Sinner, who is not competing at the US Open due to health problems. His non-participation, together with Alcaraz's return, changes the balance of power in the draw and increases the significance of the Spanish tennis player's further matches. The tournament will show how quickly he can return to the form he had before the injury. Tagesspiegel ↗
