Kubicki leads the FDP, Strack-Zimmermann warns against going it alone

At the FDP federal party congress in Berlin, Wolfgang Kubicki was elected the party's new chairman following a contest with Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann. Kubicki received almost 60 percent of the votes, while his challenger got approximately 40 percent. The vote revealed a split among the liberals into two camps. Spiegel.de ↗

Strack-Zimmermann ran as a surprise candidate, even though it had originally been expected that Kubicki would be elected unopposed. The Member of the European Parliament thereby opened up a power struggle over the direction of the weakened FDP. After the vote, Kubicki sharply attacked his rival and warned her against further splitting the party. She, in turn, stated that she was ready to offer Kubicki her hand in cooperation, while at the same time warning him against taking unilateral steps. Tagesspiegel ↗

The FDP leadership also presented a proposal at the congress to revive the economy. More than 600 delegates debated, among other things, a four-tier income tax rate of 15, 25, 35, and 42 percent. The economic program is meant to be one of the party's responses to its weak political position. Deutschlandfunk ↗

Further developments within the FDP will depend on whether Kubicki manages to also involve Strack-Zimmermann's camp. The outcome of the vote gave him a majority, but at the same time showed that the internal party conflict did not end with the election of the chairman. Deutschlandfunk ↗
