From July, Every New Car Must Have an Alcolock Connector — Blowing Before Every Trip Is Not Mandatory
Videos
From July 2026, a new obligation applies in the European Union: every new car sold in the EU must be equipped with technical preparation — a standardized connector — that enables the subsequent installation of a device for measuring alcohol in the breath. Automakers are required to provide this interface before the vehicle leaves the factory. Der Standard ↗ EU Regulation 2019/2144 ↗
A misunderstanding is spreading in internet discussions: the obligation does not concern daily breath testing before starting the engine. The measuring device itself — the alcolock — is not automatically installed in every car. Its deployment depends on national legislation, a court order or a public authority order, or possibly on a voluntary or corporate decision. The principle is simple: the driver blows into the device, and if the legal limit is exceeded, the electronics block the ignition. The devices must comply with the European standard EN 50436.
The measure is part of the EU's broader road safety policy, whose goal is to reduce the number of all fatal accidents and serious injuries on roads by 50 percent by 2030 and to move closer to the Vision Zero goal by 2050. Studies show that alcolocks significantly reduce recidivism of driving under the influence of alcohol during their use. For the vast majority of motorists, the mandatory connector will remain invisible — just like the intelligent speed assistant (ISA) and the digital black box, which have been mandatory for new vehicles in the EU since July 7, 2024.
