Romanian director Cristian Mungiu won the Palme d'Or at the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival for the drama Fjord. This marks his second win in the highest category of this prestigious festival. The film tells the story of a strictly religious married couple living in a small Norwegian village, who come under suspicion of violence against their children. The subject thus touches on the conflict between conservative values and progressive social norms. Deutschlandfunk ↗ France24 ↗
Director Mungiu received the award from the jury, which was led by South Korean director Park Chan-wook. A total of 22 films competed in the main competition at the festival. seznamzpravy.cz ↗ El Pais ↗
German director Valeska Grisebach took home the Jury Prize with her film Das geträumte Abenteuer (The Dreamed Adventure). The cast of the winning film includes Norwegian actress Renate Reinsve and American actor Sebastian Stan. The film can be seen as a reflection of current social contradictions and the discrepancy between proclaimed tolerance and real authoritarian tendencies in modern societies. The Palme d'Or confirms Mungiu's standing among Europe's leading auteur filmmakers. Welt ↗ n-tv ↗
