Putin faces domestic discontent and diplomatic setbacks, Moscow ramps up nuclear rhetoric

In parallel with the diplomatic visit, Moscow carried out extensive nuclear maneuvers together with Belarus. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko joined via videoconference the first joint exercises of nuclear forces in the history of both countries. The exercises took place on the territory of Belarus and included testing ground-based, naval, and air-based nuclear weapons, including the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile from northern Russia at a target area in Kamchatka. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Putin had shared with the Chinese president the idea of storing enriched Iranian uranium in Russia. Putin also declared that the use of nuclear weapons would be a last resort. The exercises drew condemnation from Europe, which considers them provocative and irrational. novinky.cz ↗
Moscow is facing serious domestic challenges. Following massive Ukrainian drone attacks on the Moscow region, sharp criticism and discontent erupted in Russia. Ukrainian drones regularly penetrate Russian air defenses, exposing geographic weaknesses in Russia that President Putin cannot change. For security reasons, the Russian president has limited his travel within Russia, and his public appearances have been reduced to visits to Saint Petersburg, Moscow, and their immediate surroundings. The local population encountered war conditions in their own homes for the first time, sparking a wave of discontent with the government. Russian nationalists and military commentators expressed frustration that Russia is unable to protect its capital city. SITA ↗
