The Artemis II mission is reaching further significant milestones on its journey to return humans to the Moon. The Space Launch System rocket with the Orion spacecraft successfully launched on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. During the second day of the flight, the crew successfully carried out a key maneuver involving an engine burn, thanks to which the spacecraft left Earth orbit and set course on a free-return trajectory to the Moon. The burn lasted less than six minutes and accelerated the capsule to approximately 38,000 kilometers per hour. tech.sme.sk ↗

On Monday, April 6, the crew entered the so-called lunar sphere of influence, in which the Moon's gravity acts on the Orion spacecraft more strongly than Earth's gravity. According to NASA, this breakthrough moment paves the way for an early return of humans to the surface of the Moon. At this point, the crew is set to break a historic record and will travel farther from Earth than anyone has in more than 50 years. Refresher.sk ↗

On Saturday, April 4, the crew of the four-member mission passed the halfway point of the distance between Earth and the Moon. On this occasion, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) released the first breathtaking images of Earth and space captured by the astronauts aboard Orion. During the second day of the flight, the crew addressed Earth for the first time, speaking about the historic significance of the mission, technical issues, and their personal experiences of being in space. ta3.com ↗

The Artemis II mission is set to last nine days, and the crew will orbit the Moon without landing on its surface. This is a key step in NASA's plan to return humans to the lunar surface. The whole world is following the progress of the mission, and a special mascot is also on board. vat.pravda.sk ↗
