The Czech national football team faced Ireland in a dramatic semi-final of the 2026 World Cup qualification play-offs. After a rocky start, in which the Czech Republic trailed 0:2, the national team managed to turn the result around. It first equalized to 1:2, and then captain Ladislav Krejčí headed in an equalizer to make it 2:2 late in regular time, sending the match into extra time. In the penalty shootout, the Czech Republic then won and advances to the final match against Denmark. irozhlas.cz ↗ eurofotbal.cz ↗
Goalkeeper Matěj Kovář played a decisive role, saving the crucial penalty. Captain Krejčí shone not only in attack but also by winning a penalty kick in the first half. Coach Miroslav Koubek, in his debut as national team manager, has paved the way toward the dream of a generation of footballers who want to reach the World Cup for the first time in twenty years. idnes.cz ↗ seznamzpravy.cz ↗
The Czech Republic will now have to contend with the favored Denmark, which handled Macedonia in its part of the play-offs. Ahead of the final, there is discussion about the possible lineup and the players' fitness. Some players, such as Vladimír Darida, who returned to the national team after a long absence, did not perform as expected in the match against Ireland, and their inclusion in the final is in question. The match represents a historic opportunity for Czech football. sport.cz - fotbal ↗ evropa2.cz ↗
