Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the second round of Brazil's presidential election and secured a fourth term in office. According to preliminary results, the current leftist president narrowly defeated right-wing senator Flávio Bolsonaro. Lula received 51.76 percent of the votes. His victory was celebrated by supporters in cities including Rio de Janeiro. The result means that the 80-year-old politician will remain at the helm of Latin America's largest country for another term. Refresher.sk ↗
However, Flávio Bolsonaro refused to acknowledge the defeat. He announced that he would demand the annulment of the results of Sunday's vote. He cited the extension of voting hours and chaos at polling stations as the reason. No details about his objections or further steps have been provided so far. STVR (Minúta po minúte) ↗
Flávio Bolsonaro is the eldest son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro. His candidacy continued the political camp of the former head of state, who represented the right-wing direction in the presidential elections. Jair Bolsonaro previously served as president of Brazil. HVG ↗
Lula's victory after a tight contest could lead to legal and political disputes over the validity of the vote. The further developments will be decided by the electoral authorities and any proceedings related to the demand to annul the results.
