Combined local self-government elections have begun in Slovakia

Combined municipal and regional elections began in Slovakia on Saturday, October 24. Polling stations in 2,926 municipalities, towns and city districts will remain open until 8:00 p.m. Voters are choosing mayors, members of municipal and town councils, chairmen of self-governing regions, and members of regional councils. teraz.sk ↗

The Ministry of Interior provides voters with a hotline they can contact with questions related to voting. Ballot papers are distinguished by color, with white and blue marking the individual types of elections. In Bratislava and Košice, voters receive two additional ballots. One is intended for electing the mayor of the city district, and the other for electing members of the local council. teraz.sk ↗

A physical ID card is required to verify identity. Not all election commissions may be able to verify a digital ID in a mobile phone. It can only be used if the relevant member of the district election commission has a mobile device with the eDoklady verification app available.

The start of voting was accompanied by complications in one of the municipalities. The election moratorium was therefore extended until 8:30 p.m. During the moratorium, politicians and other public figures continued to communicate on social media. The ministry does not consider free status updates to be election campaigning, but experts have pointed out that they can serve a similar purpose. After the polling stations close, vote counting and the announcement of results will follow. Nový Čas ↗
