Copernicus: Western Europe experienced its hottest September

September 2026 was the hottest in Western Europe since records began. The average temperature was 2.5 degrees Celsius higher than usual, according to the Copernicus climate service. The record temperatures were accompanied by drought, which affected a large part of Western, Central and Eastern Europe. El Mundo ↗

Worldwide, September was the second hottest month since records began. Only September 2023 was hotter. Copernicus also stated that September was the second consecutive month in 2026 in which global temperatures exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. ANSA ↗

The hot and dry conditions from summer continued into the beginning of autumn. In Western Europe, river levels fell, and in some places extremely low flow rates occurred. While Western Europe set a temperature record, Europe as a whole recorded its third hottest September in the history of measurements. Tagesspiegel ↗

Copernicus warned that global temperatures remain above the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold. According to climate experts, the intensifying El Niño phenomenon increases the risk of further temperature records in the coming months. The development will depend on the further course of global climate conditions and on how El Niño evolves. Der Standard ↗
