Berlin moves toward government talks between the Left Party, SPD and the Greens

Die Linke, the Social Democratic Party of Germany and the Greens in Berlin have agreed on a joint approach against antisemitism. The agreement removes the main obstacle to starting exploratory talks on forming a new state government. Die Zeit ↗

The agreement was reached approximately two and a half weeks after the elections to the Berlin state parliament. It includes an action package intended to determine the approach to antisemitic incidents. Differing positions on this very issue had so far been one of the biggest problems in the talks between the three parties. Tagesschau ↗

Representatives of Die Linke, the SPD and the Greens held several preliminary meetings in recent days. After the third round of talks, however, the politicians left the negotiating venue without providing details about the content of the discussions. The parties continued negotiating a joint line on tackling antisemitism. Deutschlandfunk ↗

According to reports in the media, the agreement opens the way for exploratory talks on a so-called red-green-red coalition. However, its formation has not yet been decided. The exploratory talks are meant to determine whether there is sufficient common ground between the parties for formal coalition negotiations and a later agreement on a new government. ORF ↗

Further steps will depend on the outcome of these talks. In addition to the issue of antisemitism, the parties will also need to find agreement in other areas of the government program.
