Gia Ford releases album A Room Within A Room. DIY praises her voice and the darker second half

Singer Gia Ford released her album A Room Within A Room on September 18 on the Chrysalis label. The British magazine DIY highlights her powerful voice, which according to the reviewer could out-shout even "the howling wind", which she sings about in the song How Do I Reply? When she uses it to the full, it is, according to DIY, majestic, especially in the second half of the album. DIY ↗

The opening track Liberty, with its piano and 80s pop, sounds according to the review as if Florence Welch had been listening to more soft rock. The more folk-oriented At Least For Now, Standing Beneath The Dream, and Cathy are described as rather forgettable. According to the reviewer, her voice stands out most when accompanied by a darker sound. The turning point comes with the track God, which moves somewhere between the more melodic Savages and the gentler Anna Calvi. DIY considers I Guess My Time Has Come to be the album's peak, in which one can hear echoes of Radiohead from the era of The Bends. DIY ↗

English singer and guitarist Gia Ford, real name Molly McCormick, started out on the Dirty Hit label with the recordings Poster Boy (2019) and Murder in the Dark (2020). After signing with Chrysalis, she released her debut album Transparent Things in 2024. Wikipedia ↗
