The Munich club fielded a significantly rotated lineup, yet struggled against Elversberg for a long part of the match. Harry Kane put the visitors ahead, but the hosts equalized with a technically well-executed strike. Bayern only reached the decisive goal after a triple substitution that changed the course of the match. n-tv ↗

After the match, coach Vincent Kompany praised Bayern's first-ever appearance in the smallest Bundesliga city in history. He also highlighted the reception that the record German champions received in Saarland. „Wünsche Elversberg das Allerbeste,“ said Kompany, hinting that he would like to return to Elversberg again next season. Before the match, Kompany had welcomed the decision of the German Football Association's sports court, which overturned the original suspension of Elversberg coach Vincent Wagner. Wagner was thus able to lead his team directly from the bench.

The result showed the gap between the two clubs, yet Elversberg still managed to make things considerably difficult for their favored opponent. Bayern will continue their league schedule aiming to confirm their status among the competition's biggest favorites, while Elversberg will fight for their first points after their first defeat.
