Alexander Zverev became the men's singles champion at the US Open for the first time in his career. The German defeated home favorite American Ben Shelton in the New York final 6:3, 7:6 (2), 5:7, 6:2. The match lasted more than three and a half hours. STVR (Spravy) ↗
Zverev, seeded first in the tournament, won his second Grand Slam title of the season and of his career. In June he triumphed at Roland Garros. Shelton entered the final as the eighth seed, seeking his first Grand Slam title, both for himself and for the United States. irozhlas.cz ↗
The German won the first two sets. Shelton reduced the deficit in the third set and extended the match, but Zverev regained control in the fourth set. At 5:2, he converted match point, though according to the description he did not initially realize it and looked around the court in confusion. Le Figaro ↗
After the final, Shelton criticized Zverev's behavior before serving. According to him, the German repeatedly let the ball bounce, which sparked discussions during the tournament. The American therefore pointed out the need to adjust the rules. El Pais ↗
After his triumph, Zverev dedicated emotional words to his mother and praised the work that led to the success. His victory in New York strengthened his standing among the most successful players of the season. Following his triumphs at Roland Garros and the US Open, he is expected to be among the main rivals of world number one Jannik Sinner. zurnal.pravda.sk ↗
