R.E.M. Guitarist Peter Buck Has a New Band and a Second Album This Year: "You Just Have to Have Trust"
It's a small miracle that Drink The Sea even manages to come together. That they released two debut albums at once in the fall of 2025 and now a second is already coming out is even more remarkable. And on top of that, they're going straight on a European tour. They must really want this — and you can hear it in their songs. Drink The Sea are not one of those supergroups that make somewhat indifferent music on the side. Rolling Stone Deutschland ↗
The lineup includes Peter Buck, who has played in about twenty-seven projects since the end of R.E.M. But here it's Barrett Martin who holds the reins as singer, drummer, producer and all-around man in one, and his rock music is never ordinary — whether it was Screaming Trees, Mad Season, or Tuatara. The rest of the lineup also has quite a résumé: singer and guitarist Duke Garwood is known primarily as Mark Lanegan's accompanist, as is guitarist Alain Johannes. The band is rounded out by Lisette Garcia and Kelsey Mines. Rolling Stone Deutschland ↗
For R.E.M. listeners, it's a reminder that after the band's breakup in 2011, Buck didn't retire but dissolved himself into dozens of side projects — and that his guitar signature can be recognized in them even where it appears nowhere on the cover.
