On Saturday, September 5, at the Velocity Festival in Dyersville, Iowa, Carrie Underwood slipped a series of nu-metal covers into her set. She surprised the audience with Shine by Collective Soul, Scars by Papa Roach, One Step Closer by Linkin Park, and Break Stuff by Limp Bizkit. Rolling Stone France ↗

Her choice of covers isn't as surprising as it might seem at first glance. The singer has repeatedly shown her love of rock, and she has several collaborations in the genre under her belt — she shared a stage with Axl Rose, invited Joan Jett to CMA Fest in 2019, and regularly returns to rock covers at her concerts. What's interesting is that three of the four covered songs date from the turn of the millennium, when nu metal and country stood at opposite ends of the American radio spectrum. The audience that comes to see Underwood today is roughly the age to remember those songs firsthand.
