American users of Apple's map application have not seen Lake Ontario under its original name since Tuesday, but as Lake America. The company made the change following a request by President Donald Trump, who on August 27, 2026 decided by decree to rename the lake. seznamzpravy.cz ↗
The change does not appear the same in all countries. Users in the USA see the new name, users in Canada continue to see the name Lake Ontario, and the rest of the world sees both names. The new name also appeared in the official American Geographic Names Information System registry. respekt.cz ↗
Similarly, Google Maps also differ depending on the user's location. This company adjusted the name on its own initiative, while the Donald Trump administration, according to available information, was exerting pressure mainly on Apple. The case shows that digital maps can change according to political decisions and depending on which country the user is viewing them from. zive.cz ↗
MapQuest took a different stance, refusing the renaming. Following this decision, it reached the top position in the navigation applications category in the App Store in the USA. Further development will depend on whether other mapping services will adopt the American name, or whether the difference between American, Canadian and international display will remain.
