FK Jablonec footballers won at home on Thursday, August 6, in the first leg of the Conference League 3rd qualifying round against the Latvian team RFS Riga, 2:0. The Czech club thus created an important position ahead of the return leg in Latvia and moved closer to advancing to the next stage of qualification. seznamzpravy.cz ↗
The home side broke through after the break. Eight minutes into the second half, Matěj Polidar waited for a cross from Martin Cedidla and beat the goalkeeper with a header from about ten meters, curling the ball into the corner near the post. Jablonec went on to add a second goal as well, and will carry a two-goal lead into the second leg without having conceded. zpravy.aktualne.cz ↗
After the match, coach Luboš Kozel praised in particular the team's defensive performance and tactical flexibility. Jablonec took the field against an opponent that, before the match, led the Latvian top division and was on an eleven-match unbeaten run in competitive fixtures. Ahead of the game, Kozel had therefore warned against underestimating the opponent, and the team wanted to confirm its good form following a successful qualifying win over Varaždín and two league victories. denik.cz ↗
The return leg in Riga will decide whether Jablonec moves closer to a return to the main phase of European competitions, where it last featured in the 2021/2022 season. The Latvian side will be chasing a two-goal deficit at home, but Jablonec will go into the match with the advantage of both the result and a clean sheet from the first leg. lidovky.cz ↗
