Commerzbank demands a say in negotiations with UniCredit after profit growth

Following record results for the first half of the year and a sharp rise in profit in the second quarter, Commerzbank is entering new negotiations with Italian UniCredit over a possible takeover. CEO Bettina Orlopp insists that the German bank must have its own say in the event of a potential takeover by the major shareholder. Spiegel.de ↗

Commerzbank's net profit for the three months to the end of June rose to 898 million euros from 462 million euros in the same period last year. The bank has thus strengthened its position at a time when it is trying to defend its independence while responding to UniCredit's growing influence. According to available information, Commerzbank's management sees dialogue with the Italian bank as a necessary step given its shareholder position. teraz.sk ↗

The results are meant to give management a stronger mandate for its next steps. According to German media, Commerzbank does not want to merely wait passively for the takeover to unfold, but is seeking negotiations in which it could influence the terms and strategic direction of the bank. UniCredit is thus coming under pressure to also take into account the position of Commerzbank's management in any potential takeover of Germany's second-largest bank. Die Zeit ↗

Further developments will depend on whether the two sides manage to find common ground. The strong financial results so far give Commerzbank arguments for a more confident approach, but the question of its independence remains open. n-tv ↗
