Lithuanian government falls, Mindaugas Sinkevičius to become new prime minister. Vilnius changes cabinet chief for the third time since the 2024 elections
Lithuania's government resigned on Tuesday, and President Gitanas Nausėda accepted the resignation. Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė stepped down after 272 days in office, and the new head of the cabinet is to be Mindaugas Sinkevičius — chairman of the ruling Social Democrats, whom the party elected as its leader in May. The fall was triggered by a reshuffling of the coalition: the Social Democrats swapped the populist party Nemuno Aušra (Dawn of Nemunas) for the Democrats for Lithuania, who returned to government. This allowed them to keep a majority of 75 seats in the 141-member Seimas. This marks Lithuania's third prime minister since the 2024 elections — after Gintautas Paluckas, who resigned over a corruption investigation, and Inga Ruginienė. Euronews ↗
The new government promises to focus on the rising cost of living, healthcare, and a more active foreign policy. In the same week, Lithuania also offered to mediate the escalating dispute between Poland and Ukraine over the history of the Second World War — according to Vilnius, both sides let themselves be carried away by emotions.
