Sweden's footballers entered Group F at the 2026 World Cup with a clear-cut victory over Tunisia, 5:1. In Monterrey, Mexico, they capitalized on their opponent's mistakes, demonstrated significant offensive superiority, and moved to the top of the group table after the opening match. Der Standard ↗
The main figure of the match was Yasin Ayari, who scored two goals. The match held special significance for him, as he has a Tunisian mother and, according to available information, could have chosen to represent Tunisia in the past. When scoring against the country of his origin, he also drew attention by not celebrating the goals. He opened the scoring as early as the seventh minute, converting a rebound after a shot from Viktor Gyökeres. sport.cz - fotbal ↗
Sweden's biggest offensive stars, Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak, also got on the scoresheet. Following their absence from the previous World Cup, Sweden returned to the tournament with a strong performance, and several of the goals came from players based at English clubs. Index.hu ↗
Tunisia failed to live up to their pre-tournament ambitions in the match and quickly lost control of the game following defensive lapses. With this high-scoring win, Sweden put themselves in a favorable position ahead of the further group fixtures, while Tunisia will have to respond to a significant defeat and a weak start to the championship in their upcoming matches. sport.sk ↗
