Hungarian government to review politicians' assets over the past 20 years

The Hungarian government will introduce checks on politicians' assets going back up to 20 years. The review will be carried out by the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV). The draft law is to be submitted to the National Assembly without delay. novinky.cz ↗

Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that the review will also apply to politicians whose mandate ended within the past five years. The check may also extend to the assets of their relatives. The aim of the measure is to verify whether the growth in public officials' assets corresponds to their income and legal means. Telex ↗

Magyar announced the measure on Thursday and described it as the fulfillment of a previous government commitment. He also denied that it would serve as a tool of political retaliation. „I think this will be a fair procedure, it is not about revenge,“ he said in a television program. Telex ↗

Details on the scope of the review and the method of assessing assets are to be set out in the forthcoming legislation. Once submitted, the National Assembly will debate the proposal. Subsequently, NAV is expected to begin examining the asset situations of current and some former politicians according to the rules approved by the law. Index.hu ↗
