Viktoria Plzeň lost 0:3 at home to Belgium's Royale Union SG on Thursday in the opening match of the Europa League main phase. Coach Radoslav Kováč admitted after the heavy defeat that his team is dealing with more problems than he expected when he took over the club in August. zpravy.aktualne.cz ↗
According to Kováč, the Belgian side was better in every respect, and Plzeň, in his words, couldn't keep up in any part of the game. The visitors scored twice on quick counterattacks and added a third goal from a set piece. According to the coach, the result could have been even higher. denik.cz ↗
"The opponent was better in every aspect of the game, simply in everything," Kováč said. At the same time, he refused to look for mitigating circumstances or excuses. After the match, he also admitted that his speech to the players this time did not have the expected effect, and the situation within the team has not improved further. idnes.cz ↗
Plzeň must now prepare for the upcoming league schedule. Kováč said that ahead of the match against Slavia, he will have to carefully choose which players he can field. However, no further details about the individual players' health status were released. isport.cz ↗
The defeat to Royale Union SG marks an unsuccessful start to the Europa League main phase for the Czech club. Before the upcoming matches, Kováč will have to address above all the gameplay problems that were clearly evident both in defense and in the transition to attack. irozhlas.cz ↗
