Spanish cyclist Enric Mas won the Vuelta a España for the first time in his career. The 31-year-old Movistar rider dominated the final standings after 21 stages covering a total distance of 3,209 kilometers. In Granada he sealed the triumph as the first Spaniard since Alberto Contador's victory in 2014. Deutschlandfunk ↗
Mas beat Slovenian Primož Roglič by 2 minutes and 15 seconds. Roglič, who is the record winner of the Vuelta, took second place. Third place went to Austrian Felix Gall, for whom it was his second overall podium finish at a Grand Tour event in 2026, following his second place at the Giro d'Italia. irozhlas.cz ↗
The withdrawal of Tadej Pogačar played a decisive role in the course of the race. The Slovenian cyclist, considered one of the main favorites, left the Vuelta in its early stages. Mas subsequently held the lead position through Saturday's queen stage as well, managing the pressure from his rivals after a brief lapse caused by taking on refreshments. isport.cz ↗
The victory ended a long wait for Spanish cycling for a home rider's triumph. Mas had previously finished just short of the top on several occasions, but this time he maintained his lead through to the final stage. The last stage in Granada was won by Norwegian Tobias Johannessen, which did not change the standings at the top of the overall classification.
