The British armed forces have had units in space since 2023. They are No I Space Operations and No II Space Warning, and according to the Ministry of Defence they "monitor and warn". The new squadron is meant to do something different: to disrupt, degrade and deny hostile activity directed against British interests in space. Its tools include electronic warfare. The context in which this comes
The announcement came nine days after the United States confirmed for the first time that it has weapons deployed in orbit. Air Vice-Marshal Jamie Thompson took over UK Space Command in June this year. Previously, from December 2024, he had been its deputy. The armed forces' investigative unit, the Defence Serious Crime Command, confirmed the arrest of a Royal Air Force member in connection with reports of theft and of a serious sexual offence against an adult, but it did not give a name. A Royal Air Force spokesperson confirmed that Thompson had been suspended "without prejudice" as part of the investigation. It is the British media who link the two pieces of information. According to the investigative unit, the theft investigation has ended and the file has gone to the Service Prosecuting Authority, the prosecution service of the British armed forces, which will decide whether to bring a charge. Limits of this view
Thompson has not been charged or convicted, and the investigative unit does not name him in its statement. The phrase "without prejudice" means that the suspension does not pre-empt the outcome of the investigation.The sources give no link between the two reports. What connects them is only that they were reported on the same day and concern the same part of the British armed forces. The suspension, moreover, has been in place since August, so it dates from a period well before the squadron was announced.
It is not yet known how many people the new squadron will have, where it will be based, or when it will reach operational capability.
